In 1904, an eleven-year-old Elizabeth Cotten began doing housekeeping jobs around her hometown of Chapel Hill, NC. Making 75¢ a month it took nearly half a year’s worth of domestic chores before she had reached her goal and earned $3.75 to buy a Stella guitar from Sears and Roebuck. The following year she wrote “Freight Train” on a sleepless night at the young age of twelve.
